The fine pipers and drum corps of Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC won the top prizes at the recent World Pipe Championships in Glasgow. The BBC Scotland story is here. The bad news is that North Americans can’t watch the embedded video.
The good news is that you can watch the band in action at SFUTube.
But they weren’t ready to come home yet. The went off again to The Northern Meeting, where
SFU’s Alan Bevan won the coveted Gold Medal for piobaireachd, and SFU’s Colin Lee won the Silver Medal for piobaireachd, which is the first prize in a separate event. Colin’s win will allow him to take his place in the Gold Medal competitions next year. Other SFU pipers winning at Inverness include P-Sgt. Jack Lee [2nd prize in the Clasp, a competition for former winners of the Gold Medal]; Callum Beaumont [4th prize in A MSR and 3rd prize in the Gold Medal]; Stuart Liddell [3rd prize in Former Winners MSR and 5th prize in The Clasp]. As well as their medal wins, Alan Bevan and Colin Lee also placed in the light music, with Colin winning the B Marches event, and Alan placing 5th in the Hornpipe/Jig event.
Well done and congratulations, lads and lassies! (and kudos to the wee ghirrrrrrl wi’ the big drum).
