Words on World Music

A pioneer of world music in Canada passes.

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

There is one group of people who just don’t seem to receive their due when it comes to saluting those who present and support world music.

The music promoter.

Here in Vancouver we have many, thank goodness, including Coastal Jazz and Blues, Mel Warner and Steve Edge (please don’t be cross if I’ve forgotten you, these are just top of mind), who put their reputations, and let’s face it, their financial well-being, on the line bringing acts here to town that others just won’t gamble on, for small profit margins and smaller audiences (loyal though, and tough as nails!)

One of the originals, Sam Gesser, has passed away in Montreal at the age of 78.  He was the man who recognized that people would want to hear Harry Belafonte, Nana Mouskouri, and many others.

We salute you, Sam!  And those who follow in your footsteps.  God bless you and all who sail on you!
